Megan Son
Data Specialist
A third-year student majoring in Statistics and minoring in English. She used Breve and Data Refine to prep and clean the data, identify gaps and silences in the data. and explore the implications of those silences. She used Tableau, Voyant, and Excel create mapping, wordcloud, and other data visualizations, and provided analysis for these visualizations. She also fine-tuned the narrative to improve clarity and focus.
David Ramirez
Data Visualization Specialist
A third-year student majoring in Statistics and minoring in Digital Humanities. He was responsible for editing and reviewing the data, in particular the visualizations of graphs/maps. He has learned more about Tableau to make the data more visually appealing and meaningful.
Erin Li
Project Manager
A fourth year student majoring in Psychobiology and minoring in Entrepreneurship. She paid close attention to schedule and milestones and ensured communication amongst team members was efficient. She kept track of project timelines and documentation. She reviewed the data visualizations and helped write and edit analyses. She investigated conclusions of the data and research findings as well as future implications.
Aaron Kaplan
Editor
A third year student majoring in Political Science and minoring in Entrepreneurship. He was responsible for overseeing the whole project in terms of design, structure, readability, and accessibility. He also was tasked with editing spelling, fixing grammatical errors, organization, and etc.
Leia Ku Cheng Yee
Web Designer
A fourth-year student majoring in Communications and minoring in Digital Humanities. She built the webpage using WordPress and was responsible for the design and interface of the website. She used color blind friendly palettes and made sure the website can be navigated easily. She also aided with the “About” page, specifically on the presentation of the data.
Claire Dinauer
Content Developer
A fourth-year Cognitive Science major and Digital Humanities minor. She was responsible for overseeing the site’s overarching narrative. She contributed the “Host Name Commonality vs Average Nightly Price” visualization and helped proofread the entire narrative for cohesiveness and structure. She also oversaw the writing and creation of the introduction, timeline, and data visualization captions to curate a cohesive narrative with the annotated bibliography and outside course readings.
Mingzhe Li (Vera)
Web Designer
A third-year student majoring in Economics and double minoring in Film and Digital Humanities. She was responsible for overseeing the design and structure of the site, purchasing server space for the project, overseeing the installation of the content-management system and any required plug-ins, working with the CMS (or HTML files) to ensure that the site performs to the team’s specifications and installing any required updates to the CMS.
Acknowledgements
We would like to express our warm gratitude towards Professor Garcia, and our Teaching Assistant, Dean for the constant support for our project. With the guidance and constructive feedback provided, we are able to use multiple computational tools, and clearer define our goals, to explore and analyze our data set. We are happy to say that we are satisfied with the outcome of the project and have learned a lot throughout the process. We really enjoyed the course and look forward to employ these new practical skills of ours in future projects.
